Le Marais Walking Tour (Private)
Although Marais literally means swamp, the good news is… It is not anymore! It has been long ago drained by monks to become a very wealthy territory: the first aristocratic district in Paris. Today, it would be a pity not to dedicate a bit of your time to the most charming, both cultural and fashionable, district of Paris.
Quite close to the city center, Le Marais still got a countryside atmosphere from back when noble class had opulent private mansions with large gardens. In this Le Marais walking tour you will get to see some of them, as well as Place des Vosges, one of the most protected royal squares in Paris.
Your meeting point is at the Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis Church, Le Marais’s main church. Even if its high facades claim your attention, turn your back on it (you will visit it later!) as the picturesque landscape between the Seine and Rue Saint Antoine is really worth it! Here you are at the medieval part of Le Marais, where it is still possible to see the oldest surrounding wall of Paris, dating back to the 12th century!
The Village Saint-Paul’s courtyards and pebble floor show the former location of a royal residence. It is a true labyrinth, but your welcomer knows all its best pathways! Listen to her fun anecdotes as you go back to the Saint-Paul Church for the proper visit that it deserves.
Your next destination in that walking tour is Place des Vosges. This closed square is just sublime. Ironically, it was built to accommodate workers but gathers today the most expensive flats in Paris! Your welcomer will be telling you all the details about its history!

From there extends the Rue des Francs-Bourgeois. The street name may allude to “bourgeois that are frank”, but rather means “free”. Free of what? Taxes, of course. This privilege given by a King from the Middle Ages was supposed to attract more inhabitants in the remote area. Indeed, the street is lined up with magnificent private mansions of magistrates and members of the Parliament.
The parallel street, Rue des Rosiers, is the heart of the Jewish Marais, a district that severely suffered during World War II. A beautifully designed synagogue is to be seen around the corner. Another community gives life to Le Marais throughout the world: the gay community. Its party and meeting places occur around Sainte-Croix of Bretonnerie Street.
Crossing Rue des Francs-Bourgeois is Rue des Archives, Le Marais’s western border. The charming medieval atmosphere around the Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais Church as you walk down to the river is nothing but alluring! Very close, on Rue de l’Hôtel de Ville (City Hall Street), stands an extremely modern building which completely stands out from the usual Haussmann buildings you come across. It is the one and only Centre Pompidou!
Overall, Le Marais is definitely a crucial district in Paris. It is the area where the old and new Paris come together. We can’t wait to show you all that is to see in this walking tour!
