On this “Meet the Locals from the Past” Montmartre tour, enjoy a visit of this lovely district like you've never seen it before! Our creative method of touring will make you feel part of the events that occurred. Follow the steps of the famous characters who lived the original “vie de bohème” (bohemian life), right in the streets of Montmartre! The idea is quite simple:

  • At the start of the tour, you’ll receive a Historical Character Card.
  • This card will allow you to see Montmartre through the eyes of one of its extravagant characters ‑ from martyred saints to innovative dancers and pioneering politicians.
  • Along the tour, your Welcomer will call you card and make Montmartre's colorful history come back to life!
  • Don’t worry! We won’t ask you to do any acting!

Montmartre has kept its village-like spirit and attracts tourists from all over the world. However, Montmartre has far more to offer! From taking backstreets to local shortcuts, get a chance to see the important highlights of Montmartre, but also the less touristy ones. On top of that, enjoy our immersive storytelling experience and meet poets, cancan dancers, aspiring painters, and pariahs who made this hill the capital of Bohemian life at the turn of the 20th century.

Let's start with the captivating story of Montmartre's inhabitants! On the hill of Montmartre, perched at 131 meters high, Romans and Christians have built temples and churches, respectively, where traces of their passage can still be found.

Your first stop is in front of the notorious Moulin Rouge cabaret that had a reputation as a brothel due to its outrageous Cancan dancers and the infamous French moral freedom. Your dedicated Welcomer will talk about these French Cancan artists… who might be on one of your character cards!

An entertaining and informative Montmartre tour like no other!

As you arrive upon a charming little square, don’t underestimate the small window shop you see in front of you. It is the remains of the Bateau-Lavoir that survived a fire in 1970. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was a residence for painters and artists. Poor, young, and struggling, most of them became so famous that their works are now spread across many countries. One of them was Pablo Picasso.

Place des Abbesses, your next stop, reflects the true spirit of Montmartre with its rural ambiance. Witness with your own eyes where Amélie walked and lived.

And now it is time to see the famous Montmartre windmills! Formerly abundant, their number dropped drastically, but the remaining ones still have plenty of anecdotes for both you and your Welcomer to share.

As you walk towards the Sacré-Coeur, your Welcomer will point out some historical inns and cabarets, as well as Montmartre’s vineyard where the precious grapes still grow today! He/she will lead you to the famous Place du Tertre. A stop here will allow you to feel the current artistic atmosphere.

Here we are at the Sacré-Coeur! We will not end this Montmartre tour without fascinating you. Take a deep breath while you stand in front of the most awe-inspiring views over Paris. We can’t wait for you to see it!

And if you're keen on history and want to see more of this concept, please have a look at our Historical Adventure Tours!

Is there a lot of walking involved in this Montmartre tour?

The Sacré-Coeur is indeed on a hill, but we made sure to take easy roads that won’t make you feel like you’re climbing! This Montmartre tour involves 2 kilometers of walking at a smooth pace, with several stops to listen to commentaries.

Won’t this walking tour be boring if I’m not a “history addict?”

You won’t ever think history can be boring after this tour. It’s a very interactive and playful visit, with a bunch of fascinating anecdotes and facts. You will get historical information from your historian expert in a way you have never experienced before!

Will we visit the inner part of any stop during this Montmartre tour?

Unfortunately, due to our time limit, we will not be visiting any buildings or churches from the inside. This Montmartre tour is only operating in open-air areas. You will see a lot of historical buildings and will be told about them but no inside visits are included. As the tour finishes at the Sacré-Coeur, you can easily visit them by yourselves.

  1. :

Spent a great morning walking the backstreets of Montmartre and learning the incredible history of those who lived and worked in the storied neighborhood. Our guide Natalie was a wealth of knowledge and knew exactly when to stop and explain something and when to let us just enjoy walking and discovering the place on our own.

  2. :

My mom and I booked this tour with Sophie just by luck, and boy were we lucky!
Our first tour with Sophie was through the back streets of Montmartre and it was fantastic. Sophie is charming, intelligent and very knowledgable of the city.
But the thing that made her truly stand out was her sensitivity. She is very in tuned with her clients and paces the group beautifully. We never felt rushed or overwhelmed, and yet we were always engage in what she was sharing and showing.
She is a delightful guide with a passion for Paris that is infectious. In fact, we enjoyed her so much we booked 3 more tours with her after this.
I would highly recommend Sophie and her Meet the Locals Team to anyone looking to enjoy a deeper look at Paris.
    Warmly and with gratitude, Allison

  3. :

Every friend I have who came to Paris recommended not missing Montmartre. As it was our first time in Paris, we booked first for a half day tour with Mathieu in order to have a good introduction to Paris and the must-see. Mathieu was really instructive and even took us in the metro and explained how to manage there for the rest of our stay. For our second day, we took one of their historic guided tours to discover Montmartre in a less touristic way! We wanted to experience what Parisians call “la vie boheme”! Ariane made this second tour really successful for us, being informative about things we didn’t see by ourselves. She introduced all the famous people of Montmartre and took us to really charming backstreets. We really recommend doing things the way we did.

  4. :

I would recommend this tour without reservation. Our guide, Ariane, was truly passionnate and knowledgeable of Paris. This made this “Montmartre artists” tour a terrific experience. We learned history, anecdotes about bohème figures and had insight into French culture and Paris’ past.
