From Montmartre to Canal Saint Martin Walking Tour (Private)
Put on a good pair of trainers and follow Frédérique from Montmartre to the Canal Saint Martin, two of the nicest and unmissable places in Paris. You will be told about painting and “bohème”, following the footsteps of Picasso and Modigliani on the Butte Montmartre.
Then, the tour will acquaint you with a quiet and elegant neighborhood, “La Nouvelle Athènes”, where artists gathered in the 19th century. Chopin and his lover George Sand lived there.
Approaching the 10th arrondissement, the bustle of the city is back but there are lots of great buildings to look at, fascinating stories to listen to, and lovely parks to visit. Last but not least, the end of the tour reaches the much-loved Canal Saint Martin, a Parisian must-see!
Frédérique will take you right from the metro to the top of Montmartre’s hill: the panoramic view over the city roofs is breathtaking. You will stroll down the streets, evoking the great past of the district, while stopping at the Bateau-Lavoir, where Picasso’s studio once stood; at Lapin Agile cabaret, where even donkeys were painters; at Moulin de la Galette, in the footsteps of Modigliani, Pissarro or Renoir.
Arriving on the charming Place des Abbesses, you will have a look at the “Je t’aime Wall” and a romantic picture as well, if you wish; then you will walk down the steep Martyrs Street, lined with cafés and fashionable shops.
At the foot of the hill, you will enter the “Nouvelle Athènes” district. Elegant neo-classical buildings and mansions used to house painters, theatre artists, writers and musicians including Berlioz, Chopin, and Delacroix. Frédérique will tell you about the “Salons”, a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host or hostess.
It might be time for a stop in one of Paris most hidden tearooms before going on continuing your walk, heading East.
On your way, you’ll discover the vast and impressive Saint-Vincent-de-Paul Church, named after a 17th century famous priest who ruled an orphanage and a charity congregation nearby. What used to be the hospital became a prison. Did you know that the notorious Mata-Hari, WWI female spy, was one of the inmates? The site has been renovated and turned into a local library, one of the most beautiful in the capital. Relax and sit back… we are still in Paris.
You will be approaching the end the tour. The Canal Saint-Martin, that you approach now is something like the quintessence of Paris, lovely at any time of the year and at every moment of the day.
Lined-up with stylish shops, the Canal offers attractive panoramas from its high metal foot bridges. Up there, you may observe either the locks functioning or the boats sailing to the Seine below or to the suburbs upstream.
