Ever wondered what Second French Empire mansions looked like? This tour is your chance to visit one of the most beautiful dwellings Paris has to offer as you were the guest of the owner of the estate: Edouard André.

During this tour you will encounter a passionate about the French Second Empire, who's particulartly intereted in the destiny of Edouard André, the heir of a rich industrial family who wanted to express his wealth by commissioning a private mansion within the up-to-date Plaine Monceau district.

With his wife, Nélie Jacquemart, he spent his life gathering magnificent masterpieces belonging mainly to the first Italian Renaissance and the French 18th century.

Nélie decided to open their private accommodation to the public, giving visitors the privilege of wandering through richly decorated rooms and experiencing how refined daily life of the Parisian upper-class was, 150 years ago.

In Details

First, your Welcomer will doubtless introduce his architect, Henri Parent, who had competed for the construction of the Paris Opera House. Unfortunately for him, he failed. Fortunately for us, he demonstrated with André’s mansion his taste for a slightly theatrical architecture. Look at the facade which doesn’t respect the alignment of the boulevard; let Edouard tell you about the exact machineries able to enlarge the reception lounges. Quite unexpected in a private house.

In the same reception rooms, Edouard will be in the right place to tell you about his socialite life during the Second Empire and his collector’s activity. He will specially share his passion for the 18th century decorative arts: 1720s white and gilded panellings, rococo patterns from the time of Louis XV, furniture that is a rigorous representation of the late Louis XVI’s reign. The series of rooms ended in his wife Nélie’s bedroom.

There, Edouard will reveal the uncommon way in which he met Nélie, who he only married 10 years later. The room shelters exquisite Rembrandt masterpieces. The display makes you understand why the Jacquemart-André private collection is so unique: because as such it ranks just after that of the Louvre – a national institution!

The first floor is Nélie Jacquemart’s kingdom, where she had a workshop she never used but turned into a domestic museum. Painter by training, she knew Art history perfectly. Her Italian collection, exhibited in intimate lounges lit by subdued light, gathers painters’ names among the most famous in the world: Donatello, Della Robbia, Botticelli, Uccello, Bellini, Carpaccio, Mantegna…

Edouard is a great friend of the Emperor Napoleon III. Believe me, it keeps you busy. Hence, he will leave you, but not without the trustable recommendation to make a stop in his dining room, for sure, the only place in Paris where you can eat beneath a ceiling painted by Tiepolo!

There are very few others opportunities in Paris to experiment such a refined and elegant moment than at the Jacquemart-André museum. So, prepare your best manners and expect the greatest pleasure.
