Montmartre Night Walking Tour
Montmartre is a unique place in Paris, a village within the city. It was a sacred hill since even before the Roman times, covered with vineyards and windmills during the Middle Ages and home of the poorest and most brilliant painters at the end of the 19th century. Scorned by the Catholic Church during the Belle-époque for its night life and its moral freedom, the hill is nonetheless crowned by the huge basilica of Sacré-Coeur.
Ancient refuge of poets and pariahs, this little part of the 18th district was able to retain most of its soul through the 19th century, thanks to the unwavering determination of its inhabitants.
He will show you what it is like to be part of this district, when tourists crowds are away and only the true lovers of the place still stand. There’s nothing he likes most than joining his friends after work in one of the neighborhood cafés. A great experience your welcomer offers to share with you.
Difficult to ignore where Montmartre is located within Paris. The intriguing white Sacré-Coeur Church is visible from almost any part of the city… Maybe you’ve come already during the day. But while accompanying your welcomer through his own neighborhood at night, you will be very surprised to discover such a different side of Montmartre.
The visit begins with the sight-seeing of the Moulin Rouge cabaret, place where the French-Cancan lived its golden age. Thanks to some world-renowned movies – like Baz Lurhmann’s one with Nicole Kidman – the whole world is still fascinated with French-Cancan and French moral freedom. But people rarely know how Paris became this way, and why Parisians came to seek oblivion in pleasure. Revelations on their way!
After the madness of the busy Place Blanche, the Place des Abbesses surroundings offer a relaxing atmosphere with plenty of cafés and restaurants. You will have the opportunity to observe Boho Montmartrois in full swing. Why not share a local-like leisure time by having a glass mid-way through your tour? It will certainly be a good opportunity for your welcomer to tell you about the Clos-Montmartre, a local vineyard of which he cannot give enough interesting facts.
You will then go to a more historic part of the walk, with the Sacré-Coeur church: stairs, gardens, mosaics and wide terraces are scheduled on the program. With an altitude of 130m, Paris’ highest ground offers a near complete view of the rest of the city.
A sacred spirit appeared in Montmartre very long before the building of the Sacré-Coeur. It originates in saint Denis’ story. First bishop of Paris, he knew a tragic fate. With a few other miraculous things, your welcomer will be pleased to unveil it for you.
Pleasure was certainly not a daily program for artists who participated in the painful birth of modern art. Montmartre’s famous artists came from every part of the world, chasing after their dreams. As today their works are dispersed in so many countries, their legacy is a bridge between different cultures. They have modern heirs with the current cartoonists, whose headquarter is Place du Tertre.
Here, at night as in daylight, activity never drops. They might ask you to pose for them a few minutes. The choice is yours. The end of the tour doesn’t mean the end of your enjoyable evening in Montmartre.
