Follow the steps of the famous characters who lived the original “vie bohème” (bohemian life), right on the streets of Montmartre! The idea is quite simple:
- At the start of the tour, you’ll receive a Historical Character Card.
- This card will allow you to see Montmartre through the eyes of one of its extravagant characters ‑ from martyred saints to innovative dancers and pioneering politicians.
- Along the tour, your Welcomer will call you card and make relive for you Montmartre’s colorful history!
- Don’t worry! We won’t ask you any acting!
Montmartre has kept its village like-spirit and attracts tourists from all over the world. However, Montmartre has far more to offer! From taking backs streets to local shortcuts, get a chance to see the important highlights of Montmartre but also the less touristic ones. On top of that, enjoy our immersive storytelling experience and be part of poets, cancan dancers, aspiring painters and pariahs who made this hill the capital of Bohemian life at the turn of the 20th century.
As all good stories we will begin with the first inhabitants! On the hill of Montmartre, perched at 131 meters high, Romans and Christians have built temples and churches respectively which traces of their passage can still be found.
Your first stop is at the notorious Moulin Rouge cabaret that had a reputation of pleasure due to its outrageous Cancans dancers and the infamous French moral freedom. Your dear Welcomer, will talk about these French Cancans artists… which might be your character card!
As you arrive on a charming little square, don’t underestimate the small window shop you see in front of you. It is the remaining of The Bateau-Lavoir that survived from the fire in 1970. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was a residence for painters and artists. Poor, young and struggling, most of them became so famous that their works are now spread in many countries. One of them was Pablo Picasso.
Place des Abbesses, your next stop, reflects the true sprit of Montmartre with its rural ambiance. Witness with your own eyes where Amélie walked and lived.
And now it is time for the famous Montmartre windmills! Formerly abundant, their number dropped drastically, but the remaining ones still have plenty of anecdotes for both you and your welcomer to share.
As you walk towards the Sacré-Coeur, your welcomer will point out some historical inns and cabarets as well as Montmartre’s vineyard which still grows the precious grapes to this day! He will lead you to the famous Place du Tertre. A stop here will make you feel the current artistic atmosphere.
Here we are at the Sacré-Coeur! We will not end this Montmartre tour without fascinating you. Take a deep breath while you stand in front of the most awe-inspiring view above Paris. We can’t wait for you to see it!
Is there a lot of walking involved in that Montmartre tour?
The Sacré-Coeur is indeed on a hill, but we made sure to take easy roads that won’t make you feel like you’re climbing! The tour involved 2 kilometers of walking at a smooth pace, with several stops to listen to commentaries.
Won’t it be boring if I’m not a “History addict”?
You won’t ever think History can be boring after this tour. It’s a very interactive and playful visit, with a bunch of fascinating anecdotes and facts. You will get historical information in a way you never experienced before!
Will we visit the inner part of any stop?
Unfortunately, due to our time limit, we will not be visiting any buildings or churches from the inside. This Montmartre tour is only operating in open-air areas. You will see a lot of historical buildings and will be told about but there is not inside visit included. As the tour finishes at the Sacré-Coeur, you can easily visit it by yourselves.
