Naughty Louvre Museum Tour
Officially, museums are serious places. As a matter of fact, works of art are made by people, who may not always feel that serious. They are also commented by docents who, commenting the same works for 26 years, yearn for a little variety. If both artists and docents are from France, the country where innuendo is a national sport, the result is this tour.
And the challenge of the tour is: how to maintain excruciatingly proper standards of speech when dealing with excruciatingly improper subject matters? It is definitely part of the fun of the tour to hear how Jean-Manuel extricates himself from this intriguing quandary. And the works? Well, you will be surprised both at how naughty the most seemingly innocent things can be, and how bluntly naughty works are left unnoticed by your fellow visitors.
You will be with an expert. As author of the 2005 “Louvre and Orsay museums Erotic guide”, Jean-Manuel looked at every single one of the 30,000 works on display in the Louvre before welcoming you on that tour.
The curators of the Louvre still refuse, one wonders why, to put all the naughty stuff in one and the same room, so you’ll trek all over the place. Not such a bad thing, after all, the Louvre deserves to be explored out and back to front. Your itinerary could be changeable, sometimes, works are moved. However, basically, you’ll get your first shock right after ticket control at the Sully wing.
Then you’ll navigate the Caryatids Room, a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture in the Louvre. Formerly used as the Throne Room. The King sat on a podium, located where the fireplace stands today. In front of him, musicians were playing from an uplifted stage, above the room gate. Nothing apparently naughty there… But investigate closer in the corners, you’ll surely find some details… or Jean-Manuel will help you to.
You head now towards Venus de Milo’s room. She’s not in question here. How could a Goddess of Love be naughty? But walking through Roman sculptures might teach you a few features about the role and place of sexuality in our civilization.
In the department of Italian art, you’ll meet masters, masterpieces, as well as fierce animals. Watch out for a baboon. Up, in the Great Gallery, one of the seven very happy males in the museum (we kid you not) awaits!
As an international class museum, the Louvre transports you across countries. Maybe, on your way, curators willing, you might get emotional by a little Scandinavian romance. Our promise: whatever the country you come from, after this tour with Jean-Manuel, you won’t look at your national art in the same way!
With such matter, a stop has obviously to be made in the Louvre French painting department. The 18th century is notorious for its twisted high class way of life. Impossible to deny when you look at that rascal Fragonard’s canvasses!
Meeting Address: Passage Richelieu, Paris, France - On the other side of the metro station Palais Royal Musée-du-Louvre (Metro lines 1 & 7)
