Colorful Characters Around Notre Dame de Paris
“Meet the Locals from the Past” is our unique historical walking tour that resurrects significant characters, taking you on a journey from the Middle Ages up to the 20th century. This is how it works:
- At the start of the tour, you’ll receive a Historical Character Card.
- With your card, step into the shoes of a crusading knight, a pioneering female sculptor, or France’s most famous medieval lovers! (Don’t worry, you won’t have to do any acting)
- Along the tour, your Welcomer will call your card. Just listen to the incredible life of your character!
As you stroll the picturesque streets around Notre Dame Cathedral, you will discover Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis. These lovely tiny islands, located at the center of Paris, are the very heart of the city, the first ever Parisians built their houses there. Along the islands’ streets, your welcomer will tell you amazing stories of ancient kings and cursed artists and show you Paris’ architectural jewels.
Starting off at The Pont-Neuf, this bridge is considered today as a romantic hangout but saw events that were not love affairs at all during the Middle Ages! This will be the chance to unveil the first character of the tour. Let’s meet now our other historic figures!
The Conciergerie, your next stop, is an architectural masterpiece. But it was previously a fearsome jail during the French Revolution as it was the last steps before the guillotine for many prisoners. One of the most famous captive was Marie Antoinette. Your welcomer will share with you some tragic stories that occurred here. This will be another opportunity to be introduced to another character.
As you walk on the Boulevard du Palais, you can’t miss the exterior view of the Holy Chapel, a Gothic jewel commissioned by King Louis IX during the 13th century. Nearby, admire the Palace of Justice (law court) which was formerly a royal palace. Be ready for another incredible reservoir of anecdotes!
And now, here we are at the charming flower market to get to Notre-Dame. The inside is as astonishing as its impressive facade. During your inner visit, admire the beautiful colors of its 13th-century – and mainly genuine – stained glass rose windows.
Time now to stroll around Notre-Dame and explore the medieval-like quarter. This neighborhood survived the centuries and will plunge you in the depth of the Middle Ages. Be prepared to meet new historic actors!
As a woman sculptor or a member of the Knights Templar, continue your lovely walk in Ile Saint-Louis. Famous for its private mansions and romantic atmosphere, this island has an environment so peaceful that you will be surprised of how boisterous and naughty some former inhabitants could have been.
Time to be back to the present! Your final stop will be the Saint-Louis-en-l’Île street. This calm shopping way portrays the real spirit of Île Saint-Louis. Not to mention it hosts Bertillon, the famous Parisian gelato shop. If you’re an ice cream lover, that’s a place not to miss!
Is the inside visit of Notre-Dame included in that tour?
Yes, we are visiting the inside of the Cathedral. Keep in mind this is a walking tour that focuses not only on Notre-Dame, but also its neighborhood. If you want a dedicated visit to Notre-Dame, click here.
